In the 1960s, Ernesto Miranda worked for a produce company in the warehouse district when he was arrested for the crimes that ultimately instigated the Supreme Court case known as “Miranda v. Arizona.” The court ruled that criminal suspects must be informed of their right against self-incrimination and their right to consult with an attorney—now referred to as the “Miranda Rights.” Ernesto Miranda was later killed in a stabbing after an argument at La Amapola, a bar that was located near the spot now covered by the southern entrance of the Footprint Center. The Arizona Diamondbacks have played at the stadium currently known as Chase Field, built over the remains of the warehouse district, ever since their inaugural season in 1998. They became the youngest team in modern MLB history to win the World Series by doing so in just their fourth season in 2001. It was less than two months after the September 11 attacks, and the Diamondbacks broke the hearts of bandwagoners across America by defeating the New York Yankees in seven games. At the same time, however, Downtown Phoenix was fighting to remain relevant while the Valley of the Sun was rapidly expanding outward, with retirees and young families settling in new developments further and further away from the urban core. As fans celebrated the D-backs victory Downtown, the Arizona Cardinals’ stadium was under construction ten miles to the northwest in suburban Glendale, and the Phoenix Coyotes were finalizing a deal to build a new arena right next door. The Coyotes would move to Glendale in 2003—before leaving the Valley altogether in 2024—and the warehouse district would continue to evolve. The Diamondbacks won the game when we recorded this.

“One of the complaints people have about old-fashioned ethnomusicology is that often the music that they recorded in the field was presented to audiences without context. Just: ‘Here’s what it sounds like.’ As if what it sounds like, is the same thing as what it is. So, here’s some context. What you’re about to hear is the authentic music of urban Downtown Phoenix, Arizona, between the years 2020 and 2024. It was a time colored by confusion and a place characterized by dramatic dichotomies. Homelessness in the shadow of sparkling new high-rises, beautiful fountains in the middle of the Sonoran Desert. Ruins of ancient Hohokam cities buried beneath modern American suburbs. The music was recorded by local artists in situ, as it was encountered by our investigative team. As such you’ll often hear what we call “native noise” in the background. Consider this a part of the authentic listening experience. Whether these recordings will enter the cultural zeitgeist is of no consequence to the authors of this study. It matters only that they enter the historical record, and that future generations have the opportunity to listen back on the voices of this lost generation.”
